September 10, 2004 -- Showcased in the September/October edition of VegNews magazine are the 14 Best Vegetarian Restaurants in North America, complete with mouthwatering photographs, chats with the chefs, veg-friendly cooking schools, menu standouts, and even restaurant recipes. Editors of the magazine selected the very best from among the thousands of nominated restaurants serving up fresh, vibrant and delicious plant-based cuisine.

This new generation of meat-free eateries runs the gamut from cozy cafand funky diners to chic Asian-fusion restaurants and other sophisticated fine-dining establishments, as well as the increasingly popular raw food emporiums. The variety in ambience, cuisine, and menu items can be deliciously staggering. Many are decidedly upscale.

"These restaurants are leaders in the restaurant industry and continue to develop high-quality, cutting-edge food that pleases vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. We are thrilled to honor their accomplishments with a 2004 Best Veg Restaurant Award," said publisher Joseph Connelly.

The winners highlight current trends including the upscale global gourmet establishments such as Millennium (San Francisco), Sublime (Fort Lauderdale), and Fressen (Toronto); casual comfort food "chains" such as Native Foods (Southern California) and Real Food Daily (Los Angeles); and raw sophistication such as Roxanne's (Larkspur, CA) and Quintessence (New York City)places that are getting noticed and putting vegetarian food on the culinary map. Not unexpectedly, some of the more well-known restaurants are located in New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco, but wonderful vegetarian restaurants can also be found in unexpected locales, such as Fort Lauderdale, Columbus, and Fort Worth.

The issue arrived on newsstands the first week of September and is also available on the magazines award-winning website, http://www.vegnews.com
